You should be mad if you want to live in Balti” that’s what my friends who now are in Chisinau, Moscow, Iasi or Bucharest say. They probably were right. Balti is not the most uncomfortable city in Moldova. It’s a kind of Chisinau, but three times smaller. The same irritating roads and the public transport which can get really crowded. The great difference makes the society. More than 54% of population of Balti are Moldovans/Romanians, 24% - Ukrainian and 19% - Russians (according to the census from 2009).  Anyway, Russian is spoken more than Romanian in Balti and mentality seems to be very Russian as well. I won’t say it’s good or bad because I’m interested in those 54% (approximately 75 000 of people), who can’t get acknowledged with news about their town in their mother tongue. Some mass-media sources in Romanian had been working in Balti since 1991. There were newspapers and a press agency, but all of them stopped their activity because of financial problems, or WERE CLOSED because of political purposes. For example, the newspaper “Curierul de Nord” finished it’s activity in 1994 after publishing some materials about the soviet concentration camp that was in Balti during the World War II. There is no free press or press in state language in Balti Currently, all the press in Balti (a city of 150 thousand inhabitants) is represented by several politically affiliated portals, station BTV subordinated to Town Hall and independent newspaper - SP. All these sources are in Russian language (only BTV is bilingual), besides SP is subordinated to some of the political forces. So independent journalism is totally missing. “How does it touch me? I’ve never been in Balti!” Well, it affects you. Balti means about 100 000 citizens entitled to vote. Balti means schools, colleges and university where young people from nearest districts come to study. Balti means the second city in importance, one that gathers and forms an essential part of Moldovan society. Think of the day when you go to vote, also go the other thousands of citizens who are subjected to daily manipulation by politically subordinated mass media. Sad scenarios It is no secret that Balti is in a silent opposition to Chisinau. When something goes wrong in the town, local authorities blame Chisinau and people believe it. People think that Chisinau discriminates and wants to ban Russian language, to close Russian schools etc. All this is the result of propaganda distributed by large news portals owned by local politicians and exploited for electoral purposes. Now imagine for a moment that it will occur to a man to achieve a sort of Donbass in Moldova. Do you know on whose side would fight consumers of that press propaganda? What I’m going to do Half a year ago I created a Facebook page dedicated to Balti. In posts I rated activity of some local authorities, published pictures of things that were wrong, etc. Then I created a blog with the same name and began to describe things that most of people from Balti had no way to know from press subordinated to pro-Eastern minded politicians. I told the story of a deported family, we investigated a corrupt official and wrote about populism of local political actors. To my surprise, some posts have been appreciated of hundreds (700) and viewed by thousands (10 thousands) of people. The investigation about the fisc’s head was taken by several important posts in the country as PRO TV and Unimedia. Example: link 1 - https://goo.gl/gkgTms  link 2 - https://goo.gl/GRHap4   link 3 - https://goo.gl/TyJlFf link 4 - https://goo.gl/3ZmCJN

For what I need money

  1. I need the "pro" package on wordpress. Why? Firstly because it is the custom, and the second - expand options for publishing / editing of materials. The free version of wordpress is good for a small blog, but not for a news portal.

  2. For promotion / advertising. The Facebook page has collected 391 likes so far and continues to grow, which means that there are potential readers. This page should be made known to not waste time, energy and money. There are still many people who do not know Social Media Bălţi, and advertising is the only way to communicate about this.

What new brings SMB? I don’t expect to change the world overnight. What I will do with your help is growing a free and politically unaffiliated local news portal in the national language. BUT, Social Media Balti will be (already is) a source of alternative views against the sensitive subjects in the region. For example, no one told the story of deported families so far. Social Media Balti started this and there will be new disturbing stories about our tumultuous past. Social Media Bălți will investigate politicians and businessmen’s possessions and businesses in the region, will report cases of corruption and violations of law that have become standards in a city without independent press. Social Media Balti will deliver quality and interesting content about the second city in Moldova. Stars of the subject As a reward SMB will offer what it does very good. Reward is regular work, news, investigations. Besides, three people from Balti who will donate money will become stars of the subject “People of Balti” with their interviews. SMB will follow you everywhere asking questions and listening to your life-stories and will tell the folk a story about a great man of Balti.
